This post is in the form of a recent exchange of email with a friend. I turned the exchange up side down here, from earliest repsonse at the top to latest entry in the exchange at the bottom etc:
Me: (from Wikipedia): However, Muslims believe that humans have altered the Injil (arguably: the New Testament or the four Gospels), therefore, the Injil now does not represent the full truth, as given by God.[citation needed] Moses received the Books of Moses, and Abraham the Books of Abraham. David gave humankind the Zabur (Psalms). Saleh is responsible for the Dhikr, which is a practice that focuses on the remembrance of God. It often includes the repetition of the names of God. On the other hand, Muhammad received the Qu'ran, which Muslims regard as the purest and truest holy book of God. In Islam, tradition states that Muhammad received this scripture through divine revelation by the angel Jibreel (Gabriel). Its purpose was to perfect the beliefs of the one true God, because of the turning away of the Jews and Christians from the true religion, into dogmas and doctrines. Muslims mistrust the books followed by Christians and Jews principally because of perceived over-frequent and inaccurate translations: they suspect that personal notes of self-appointed apostles or the opinions and explanations of one person or another have crept into the original texts over time.
Islam, however, from its very beginnings, separated the word of God from the word of Muhammad, and from the words of people regarding the life of Muhammad - to avoid[citation needed] such a confusion. Muslims regard the words of the Qu'ran as fully accurate and unchangeable; they maintain that one cannot doubt their truth for they are the same everywhere[citation needed]. On the other hand, Islamic tradition separates the words of Muhammad and the stories recorded about Muhammad into several different books based on accuracy, trust of source or possible degree of inaccuracy. Not all quotations ascribed to Muhammad are necessarily true ones."
Friend: and they should have added that the majority of Muslims in the world today follow these transcripts of the words of Muhammad (even though they may be full of inaccuracies) instead of following the Quran.
I (at least in my head, and to a few people I know) refer to most Muslims these days as Muhammadans, they are not true Muslims. They recite the Quran, but forget that the Quran is the book to follow not the hadiths.
Me: Fine. But I don't give a rat's ass about anyone but you because the rats don't car about me so why should I them? Do you personally know that "On the other hand, Islamic tradition separates the words of Muhammad and the stories recorded about Muhammad into several different books based on accuracy, trust of source or possible degree of inaccuracy. Not all quotations ascribed to Muhammad are necessarily true ones?" Do you know the books and their order in terms of accuracy? (I don't) By the way, Islam (this specific issue) is a classic example of my axiom "Everything works on paper but nothing works correctly in reality." Possibly, we are so effed up that not even God can get it right with us?
